The view from Charlcombe

Charlcombe church

From the church descend the steps and turn right to follow Charlcombe Lane as it curves left round the head of the valley. Leave Charlcombe Lane when it turns right and continue straight on down Richmond Road passing a school and playing fields on your right. Continue downhill towards a church. Just past the church bear a little right to walk down Lansdown Road. We are aiming to turn right into Bennett Street. You will see the name of the street engraved in the stonework of the house on the corner. Follow Bennett Street to The Circus. This beautiful circle of sweeping terraces was the work of both the Woods. It is exciting to stand there enclosed by the eighteenth century! Bear right round part of The Circus to Brock Street, and turn right again to Royal Crescent. The work of John Wood the Younger, this magnificent curving terrace of thirty houses is designed as one harmonious whole with rows of Ionic columns supporting a continuous frieze. The Crescent, with its wide pavements and cobbled carriageway, overlooking fields sloping down to the Avon, was a favourite promenade for the citizens of Bath. Jane writes often of walking here, as do her characters. Number 1, still equipped with its iron torch snuffer on the railings by the door, is open to the public. Inside, the rooms are furnished with typical eighteenth-century elegance. The kitchen, which contains a display of weight-driven spits in action, is particularly fascinating.
